- Regrowth inside ballast tanks (Article) — ships take on ballast water in one port and discharge it in another, carrying whatever lived there with them. Treatment kills most of it, but the survivors multiply during the voyage and can exceed discharge limits before arrival; bacteria rebound within 18 hours to 7 days, feeding on the dissolved remains of everything the treatment killed and freed of the predators that would have eaten them.
