Hello everyone, and welcome to issue #9 of Music findings. Ten straight off the playlist — this one leans old: 80s synths, country heartbreak, stadium rock, and a bachata standard:

• Kate Bush — Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) — that stalking drum machine and a voice bargaining to swap places with someone; 1985, and it still sounds like nothing else:

• Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco — Touch The Sky — the Curtis Mayfield horns slowed to a strut, plus a Lupe verse that walks off with the track:

• Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox — Young And Beautiful — Lana’s Gatsby ballad handed to an actual 1920s jazz band; the era it was always pointing at:

• Dolly Parton — Jolene — three chords, one name repeated, and a plea that never gets an answer.

• Bon Jovi — Livin’ On A Prayer — talk box intro, Tommy and Gina, and that shameless key change at the end.

• Aventura, Judy Santos — Obsesion — the bachata that went global: Romeo insisting it’s love, Judy answering that it isn’t.

• Bastille, Ella Eyre — No Angels — a mixtape stitch-up of TLC’s “No Scrubs” over the Twin Peaks theme. Shouldn’t work; does.

• Mt. Joy — Silver Lining — loose, sunlit folk-rock about wanting the good ending and not quite believing in it.

• Benson Boone — Beautiful Things — whisper-quiet verse, then the whole thing kicks the door in at the chorus.

• Cleffy — Meet you at the Graveyard — sped-up, mournful synth-pop; the melody does all the talking.
